The R380 is what was fitted to 90's and 110's when the 300tdi defender came out, most notable difference is the engine is mounted further forward than in previous models. Many of the cable/ oil pipes ect are different lengths/ shapes. Some of these you may be able to source from the Disco or just purchase new. He was thinking about overhaul time until our local independant showed him cars with + 400,000km and still not needing overhaul. Goes to show with regular maintainance they can go forever. Sourcing your engine. 300TDi engines come in various forms - manual or automatic, EGR or non EGR, and the very late ones have fly by wire throttle. What you ideally want is a non-EGR engine from a manual Discovery. Automatic engines can be converted to manual but you will need to source a manual flywheel and housing, along with all the bolts.
If you retain the LT77 gear box, the 300tdi engine sits exactly where the old 4-cyl engine was and requires modified engine mounts as the engine is 6 inches further back than where Land Rover fitted their 300tdi's. This also means that you have to extend the radiator/inter-cooler/oil cooler/PAS pipes and a chop about a 300tdi exhaust pipe.

I know the 300TDI engine's are more refined but i never hear good stories about them mainly overheating problems etc. What ever i decide on it will be getting rebuild before being fitted (new rings, gaskets, etc) There are plenty of people on here that have done this sort of trip so im hoping they can help me from there experience. Nov 15, 2011. #9. its common for lift pumps to fail often as yours has where the lever mechanism breaks ,often failure isnt noticed if system is very good and as injection pump will suck it through .the two one way valves often get **** sticking them open.
