The noise appears to be in the column and clicks and catches when Hi Have a BMW x5 4.6 E53. Recently got the gearbox oil changed and the level is correct rechecked it today.

It could be a central locking fuse. Look in your manual and/or fuse card in upper glove box to see witch fuse you need to check. you might also pull the central locking switch and check its' function and connector on bottom. If someone spilled a liquid on it, it could be shorting or not working.
